The Treasured Quran

The field of Qur’anic interpretation is rich with scholars and researchers who work individually or collectively. The work of many of them has become an important part of the rapidly expanding body of digital content, in many cases outside academic frameworks, or within them, as in large institutional projects carried out at the national level, one example is the project of Dr. Şeyhmus Demir in Türkiye, where a team of approximately 350–400 researchers works together. The project seeks to develop a lexicographical encyclopedia of Qur’anic vocabulary, primarily intended to assist specialists in translating the Qur’an into Turkish and other languages. These projects intersect with others such as the Doha Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language, which is not primarily centered on Qur’anic interpretation, but nevertheless represents an important resource for researchers seeking to explore the finer nuances of meaning.

“Academic” projects attempt to reach meaning—or to establish meaning—through scientific methodologies. They operate through universities and engage dozens or even hundreds of specialists. By contrast, individual projects often contain considerable speculation, assertions, and, in some cases, surprising claims, with only a few exceptions.

It can be said that the common challenge faced by both groups is the relationship between wording and meaning. This is where NAWA becomes significant, as an attempt to provide an algorithm for the relationship between form and meaning, and consequently to establish a systematic methodology that can be used for contemplating the Qur’an, analyzing its vocabulary, and exploring previously unrecognized meanings.

The significance of NAWA is not limited to the analysis of words. It extends to examining a number of fundamental concepts and questions in Qur’anic studies, such as: What is the essential definition of the word "Qur’an"? What is meant by a Dhikr? What is the fundamental difference between Dhikr, Dikr and Tadabbur?

The Qur’an is a book with a universal message. Its universality has extended beyond Arabs and Muslims to encompass others as well. This is not a new phenomenon, but rather one that continues to expand steadily. Indeed, demand for Islamic content—particularly digital content—among non-Arabs exceeds the corresponding demand among Arabs.

يزخر مجال تفسير القرآن الكريم بعلماء وباحثين يعملون بصورة فردية او جماعية ، وقد أصبحت أعمال عدد منهم جزءًا مهمًا من المحتوى الرقمي المتنامي، بعيدا عن الأطر الاكاديمية في حالات كثيرة أو منضويا تحتها كما في المشاريع المؤسسية الكبيرة التي  تنفذ على مستوى الدول، مثل مشروع الدكتور شيخموس دمير في تركيا (حيث يعمل 350-400 باحث ضمن فريق واحد)، و هو مشروع يسعى إلى تطوير موسوعة معجمية لمفردات القرآن تهدف بصورة لمساعدة المتخصصين في ترجمة القرآن للتركية أو لغيرها من اللغات. و تتقاطع هذه المشاريع مع مشاريع أخرى مثل معجم الدوحة، الذي لا يتمحور أساسًا حول تفسير القرآن، لكنه يمثل مصدرًا مهمًا للباحثين عن دقائق  المعاني.

و تحاول المشاريع "الاكاديمية" الوصول إلى المعنى او "تثبيته" من خلال منهجيات علمية  فتعمل من خلال الجامعات و توظف العشرات أو المئات من المتخصصين، بينما ستجد في المشاريع الفردية الكثير من التوهم و الادعاءات و أْحيانا العجب الا ما ندر.

ويمكن القول أن التحدي المشترك لكلا الطائفتين هو العلاقة بين اللفظ والمعنى، وهنا تظهر أهمية النوى باعتبارها محاولة لتقديم خوارزمية للعلاقة بين اللفظ والمعنى، ومن ثم بناء منهجية قياسية يمكن استخدامها في تدبر القرآن وتحليل مفرداته و تلمس معان جديدة.

ولا تقتصر أهمية النوى على تحليل الألفاظ، بل تمتد إلى النظر في عدد من المفاهيم والأسئلة الأساسية في دراسة القرآن، مثل: ما التعريف الجوهري "لكلمة"  للقرآن؟ ما المقصود "بمفردة" بالذِّكر؟ ما الفرق الجوهري بين الذِّكر و الدكر والتدبر؟

و القرآن الكريم كتاب ذو رسالة عالمية، و نستطيع القول أن عالميته تجاوزت العرب و المسلمين و توسعت لتشمل غيرهم و هو ليس بامر جديد لكنه في اتساع متطرد، بل إن الطلب على المحتوى الإسلامي (الرقمي خصوصا)  عند غير العرب يتجاوز نظيره عند العرب.

NAWA possesses a range of strengths that could enable it to develop into a unique and valuable project

1. Revealing a new dimension of the Qur’an’s miraculous nature

   • The intrinsic meanings of words

   • The meanings of the Qur’anic disjointed letters (Muqaṭṭaʿāt)

   • Semantic patterns and structures

   • Intrinsic coherence

2. Providing a tool for deep contemplation of the Qur’an.

3. Distinguishing between similar words and verses, while introducing a new perspective on the concept of synonymy.

4. Serving as a translation tool.

5. Addressing superficial or arbitrary interpretations of the Qur’an.

6. Combining scholarly depth with accessible presentation, by expressing meanings in text or transforming them into structured data and visual models.

7. NAWA is digital by nature and can be developed into numerous applications, including: A semantic engine, An interactive Qur’anic dictionary, Tools for analyzing roots and vocabulary, Translation tools, Educational applications, Platforms for Qur’anic contemplation, APIs that can be integrated with conversational AI applications

8. The ability to generate unconventional content that can continue to grow for many years.

This aligns well with the ongoing digital transformation and the changing behavior of audiences, who increasingly seek focused, accessible, and rapidly consumable information.

تمتلك النوى مجموعة من نقاط القوة التي يمكن أن تجعلها مشروعا فريدا و مهما:

1. الكشف عن وجه جديد من وجوه الإعجاز القرآني:

   • المعاني الجوهرية للكلمات

   • معاني الحروف المقطعة

   • النسق المعنوي

   • الانسجام الجوهري

2. تقديم أداة للتدبر العميق

3. التمييز بين الألفاظ والآيات المتشابهة، و تقديم مفهوم جديد لمسألة الترادف

4. أداة للترجمة

5. مجابهة القراءات العبثية للقرآن

6. الجمع بين العمق العلمي وسهولة العرض  و يتمثل ذلك في إنتاج المعاني نصيًا، أو تحويلها إلى بيانات ونماذج بصرية

7. النوى رقمية في أساسها و يمكن تحويلها إلى تطبيقات عديدة :محرك دلالي، قاموس قرآني تفاعلي، أدوات لتحليل الجذور والمفردات، أدوات للترجمة، تطبيقات تعليمية، منصات للتدبر، واجهات برمجية API يمكن دمجها مع تطبيقات المحادثة.

1. A large and growing demand among Arabic speakers and non-Arabic-speaking audiences. The global market for Islamic education and content—including Islamic podcasts and Qur’anic interpretation—is estimated at approximately $4 billion, yet remains largely underserved.

2. A need for a new, systematic approach to Qur’anic contemplation that complements and extends beyond traditional methodologies.

3. NAWA could provide a corrective framework and a platform for scholarly responses to arbitrary or unsupported approaches to Qur’anic interpretation.

4. The Qur’an has been translated into English dozens of times, perhaps more than 100, and there are also numerous Turkish and Persian translations. Given the diversity of these translations, it is reasonable to expect differences in accuracy, methodology, and interpretation. NAWA offers a structured methodology that could contribute to achieving greater consistency and accuracy in translation. It is important to emphasize that NAWA does not claim to provide a definitive interpretation of the Qur’an; rather, its aim is to improve understanding and translation through a more systematic approach.

1. حجم طلب كبير من المتحدثين باللغة العربية و غيرهم من الأجانب، اذ يبلغ حجم الطلب العالمي 4 مليار دولار  (التعليم و البودكاست الإسلامي شاملا تفسير القرآن) وهو سوق غير مستغل بالكامل.

2. حاجة الناس لمنهجية علمية جديدة في تدبر القرآن غير المنهجية التقليدية.

3. قد تشكل النوى مسارا تصحيحيا  و منصة للرد العلمي على المنهجيات العبثية.

4. تجاوزت ترجمات القرآن للانجليزية العشرات، ربما تفوق 100 ترجمة، أيضا اذا نظرنا للترجمات التركية و الفارسية فهي كثيرة ، ويمكن التوقع بأنها لا تخلو من الضعف أو التحيزات، بينما توفر النوى منهجية منضبطة ستصل بالترجمة الى أعلى دقة ممكنة. و أنوه أن النوى لا تدعي التأويل التام بل تحسين الفهم.

1. It is essential to identify the correct root of a word before deriving its intrinsic meaning. I have observed that many Arabic dictionaries have addressed this issue through grouping rather than differentiation. For example, instead of investigating samū (سمو), samāʾ (سمأ), and samī (سمي) as potentially distinct roots, dictionaries have often grouped them under the broader category of “sīn, mīm, and what follows.” This approach to grouping can result in meanings that are insufficiently precise. NAWA offers a potential solution by comparing the intrinsic meanings generated from several possible linguistic origins and then selecting the root that demonstrates the greatest consistency with the established meaning.

2. Prepositions and pronouns: NAWA has not yet accounted for many of the prepositions (ḥurūf al-maʿānī) and pronouns, primarily because their linguistic origins have not yet been established. However, their origins may be identified through further experimentation and systematic analysis.

3. The scale and complexity of the project: The research has many branches that could not realistically be explored by one person, as they require substantial effort and potentially a multidisciplinary team. The research has also been largely limited to the morphological pattern faʿala (فَعَل), representing the basic past-tense verb, and has not yet investigated the other morphological patterns associated with different temporal or grammatical functions, although the theory appears capable of being expanded in this direction.

4. The academic framework: It has been difficult to identify an appropriate academic discipline within which the theory could be formally situated and developed. Even after consulting professors from various fields, questions remain as to whether NAWA belongs primarily to lexicography, morphology, or Arabic philology. One option was therefore to title the book “An Introduction to Arabic Linguistics”, avoiding the constraints imposed by existing academic classifications and allowing NAWA to serve as the seed of a long-term scientific and research project involving a large multidisciplinary team. The theory could subsequently be given a more specialized designation appropriate to the field in which it is ultimately developed.

5. Levels of learning and application: Understanding how the theory works and becoming proficient in using the algorithm involves several levels, each requiring a different amount of time and intellectual effort. Reaching a basic level of proficiency may require only a few hours, while deep contemplation and advanced application would require practice extending over several days or weeks.

1. من الضروري معرفة الأصل الصحيح للكلمة قبل اشتقاق معناها الجوهري، و قد لاحظت أن الكثير من المعاجم قد عالجت هذا الامر بالتجميع لا بالتخصيص، فبدل البحث في الكلمات "سمو" و "سمأ" و "سمي" فضلت المعاجم ادراجها تحت باب "السين و الميم و ما يليهما"، هذا النهج في التجميع أدى الى انتاج معاني غير دقيقة. تقدم النوى حلا لهذه المشكلة اذ يمكن مقارنة المعاني الجوهرية لعدد من الاحتمالات الممكنة للأصل اللغوي ثم اختيار الاصل الاكثر انسجاما مع المعنى الشائع.

2. حروف المعاني و الضمائر: لم تفسر النوى الكثير من "حروف المعاني" و "الضمائر" و ذلك بسبب عدم معرفة الأصل اللغوي لهذه الكلمات، ولكن تأصيلها ممكن من خلال التجارب

3. حجم المشروع الكبير و المتشعب: للبحث تشعبات كثيرة لم يكن بالإمكان العمل فيها – بشكل فردي-  لأنها بحاجة لجهد كبير و ربما لفريق عمل من تخصصات متعددة، كما أن البحث اقتصر على الوزن "فَعَل" المعبر عن الفعل الماضي و لم يبحث في الاوزان الصرفية (الزمنية) الأخرى - مع أنه قابل للتوسع في هذا المجال-.

4. الاطار الاكاديمي: من  الصعوبة إيجاد المساق الاكاديمي المناسب لاحتواء النظرية و تطويرها، حتى بعد استشارة العديد من الأساتذة في شتى المجالات، أهي تندرج تحت مساق المعجم ام الصرف أو ربما فقه اللغة، لذلك كان احد الخيارات ان يعنون الكتاب ب "مدخل الى علم اللغة العربية" تفاديا لمقيدات الأطر االكاديمية و أملا في أن تكون النوى  بذرة لمشروع علمي-بحثي يمتد لسنوات و يعمل فيه فريق كبير من شتى التخصصات، وهناك بالتأكيد امكانية تسميتها بما يتناسب مع المجال المستهدف.

5. لفهم طريقة عمل النظرية و رفع كفاءة المستفيد من الخوارزمية هناك عدة مستويات كل منها يتطلب وقتا و جهدا فكريا، سيتطلب ذلك ساعات قليلة لينتقل المستخدم لمستوى مقبول، و لكن التدبر العميق سيتطلب تمرينا يمتد لأيام أو اسابيع قليلة.
